- No lien, attachment or retention of title in Bilbogen when you file the request.
- Proof of ownership and of the sale.
- Objective proof of export: foreign registration, a CMR or an EAD. A paid invoice alone is not enough.
- The number plates are handed in before the car leaves.
- Cars over 35 years old and leased cars on periodic tax get no refund.

Questions and answers
What is the export refund?
When a car registered in Denmark leaves the country, Motorstyrelsen pays back the registration tax still left in the car. The amount is worked out from the car’s market price today, less 15 %, at least 8,500 kr.
Who can get it?
Dealers and private persons alike. The money goes to the car’s owner. You file the request in Motorregistret with MitID; without MitID you can write to Motorstyrelsen.
What does it cost?
A fee of 2,250 kr per car, paid by card when you file the request. It is refunded only in special cases, for example when the request is refused because of a lien.
When does the money come?
Only once the car has left Denmark and Motorstyrelsen has all the documents — then within 9 weeks. Any debt to the public sector is taken off first, and the payout can be delayed.
Why do people often get less than expected?
Motorstyrelsen looks only at dealer adverts, takes 1,180 kr off for number plates and a 5 % advert deduction, and adjusts for mileage and condition. That is why the calculator also shows a worst case.
Which cars get nothing?
Cars over 35 years old, damaged cars and leased cars on periodic tax. Many electric cars get nothing either, as the tax on them is low.
